DISH Network hasn’t taken “no” “denied” or “not yours” for an answer before in its battle against TiVo, and it’s not going to start now. In a statement, the company expressed its plans to appeal the Federal Circuit’s ruling against a rehearing to the Supreme Court. No matter how it ends, customers don’t have to worry about jackbooted government agents (or software updates, whatever) stealing their precious DISH DVR functionality, because its “next generation” DVR software has already been downloaded to your box, and does not infringe on any patents. We’ll leave this up to the lawyers to fight out, but in the meantime, click HERE to read up on Dish’s side of the fight.
When the new season of Survivor starts shooting this summer, they will finally be doing so in HD. When the show airs early in 2009, it’ll be the first of CBS’s reality shows to be broadcast in better than 480i. Not sure why you took so long CBS but its about time.
You’d think that people would realize that even if a GPS is able to tell you where to go, you still need to have some sort of brains just in case something that the GPS can’t forsee is prohibiting you from taking that route. But once again, my expectations have been shattered.
A truck driver in Boston simply took the GPS at its word and didn’t bother worrying about the low clearance bridge which was on the route he was about to take. After slamming into a bridge at 70mph, he decides that he needs to blame the GPS, and not his half of a brain.

NTT DoCoMo has just announced that they’ve successfully field tested a Super 3G wireless network that reached downlink speeds of 250Mbps (the technology’s theoretical maximums are a 300Mbps downlink and a 75Mbps uplink, so 250 down ain’t too bad). Unfortunately, given that DoCoMo doesn’t plan on having the technology finalized until 2009, the world won’t be basking in 300ish Mbps mobile bliss just yet.
Microsoft is SOOOO happy with its results after releasing Vista SP1, they are offering free email and chat support until March 18, 2009. Doesn’t matter where or how you got it (outside of you being a pirate), support is free. The words FREE and MICROSOFT doesn’t seem to fit together too well. The first time I typed this post and put those words together, my hard drive immediately caught on fire. Strange.
Gibson sparked up a lawsuit against Activision claiming that Guitar Hero titles violate one of its patents. Now the company appears to be on the warpath, suing Wal-Mart, Target, GameStop, Amazon, Toys ‘R’ Us and Kmart in an attempt to get the game off of store shelves. Reportedly, Gibson took “this action reluctantly, but is required to protect its intellectual property.” The games are still available but get em before they are gone…
Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron beta is out and about, running GNOME 2.22 and Linux Kernel 2.6.24, with Firefox 3 beta 4 thrown in for more pre-release funtimes. Reportedly, FSN Detroit has locked up deals with the Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings to “televise nearly all their games — exhibition, regular season and playoff — for at least the next decade.” Apparently, the revised deals will enable FSN to pick up the rights to all telecasts not claimed by a national network, and we’re already told that it’ll air 152 Tigers games this season, with 103 being in high-definition.
